Workshop on geospatial information management arrangements and the wider integrated data ecosystem in Europe and neighboring regions
11 (afternoon) – 13 February 2026 Vienna, Austria
The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, Pact for the Future, and the Sevilla Commitment - all recognized and encouraged the role and use of geospatial information, Earth observation, remote sensing, and statistical information, as well as a wide range of data to address national priorities and measure progress on sustainable development. In today’s data-centric world, data is the fuel of our society. The Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management focuses on the development of effective strategies on how to build and strengthen national capacity concerning geospatial information to address national priorities and global agendas.
Geospatial and statistical information are fundamental components of national digital public infrastructures, together they provide crucial data and location intelligence to inform policies, deliver services and monitor change and progress across multiple sectors. As such, integrated geospatial and statistical information are key enablers for economic growth, national security, sustainable environmental management, and social well-being. The integration of geospatial information and statistical data ensures a broader comprehensive country’s national data ecosystem and its digital currency. Data integration helps promote intra- and inter-national comparability and is essential for measuring, monitoring, and reporting progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Over the past decade, the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) has developed frameworks, strategies and guides notably the United Nations Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (UN-IGIF) and, alongside the Statistical Commission, the Global Statistical Geospatial Framework (GSGF) to help countries modernize and integrate national geospatial information and national statistical information for national priorities and global agendas. The workshop aims to share knowledge and country experiences in advancing the implementation of the geospatial and statistical frameworks in Europe, Eastern Europe and neighbouring regions, and understand opportunities and challenges of developing an integrated and innovative data ecosystem to solve national priorities and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.
